about
Lyrically, "Get the Picture" is a contemplation of perception; on the blurred line that separates fact from fiction in a society preoccupied with entertainment and social media. The idea first came to me during a conversation with a friend about the Freddie Mercury biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody", in which it was my perception that my friend had perhaps given a little too much credence to the historical accuracy of some of the events, characters, and dramatization in the film. Briefly musing over this topic led me to parallels all over the media (television, social media, journalism, interpersonal relationships, etc.). Why are we so steadfast in our commitment to our own understanding of the world as we see it?
Musically, inspiration for the track comes from my admiration of a mishmash of alternative and post-punk artists. Amnesiac-era Radiohead and solo Thom Yorke for the pulsing electronic rhythm and crisp bass guitar. Violent Femmes for the frenetic acoustic riffs. The last minute or so especially is heavily influenced by the screeching sonic kaleidoscope of Robert Fripp's soaring layered electric guitars on Bowie's "Heroes". The song was recorded and mixed by me alone, using the only tool I had at my disposal at the time: GarageBand. Mastering is courtesy of Joe Lambert (which may or may not have had something to do with my undying affection for Dirty Projectors' Bitte Orca).
"Get the Picture" precedes the debut Reticent Alien album "Glass House Wilderness", available on digital and vinyl on October 7th, 2022.
lyrics
Lyrics:
Go see a life, see a life bloated up much larger
With your appetite, your appetite tied to your belief
And your voyeur's eyes see black and white, blind to any color
We've fallen for your climb, you were gone before your time
And everybody thinks they get the picture
Front row for the fight, and from every seat in sight
Everybody thinks that they have it right
You feed the fires, feed the fires and find you are the forest
You advertise, advertise and find yourself for sale
You learn your lines, learn your lines and now you're speaking for us
We're all for your decline, in the court of our design
Everybody thinks they get the picture
Front row for the fight, and from every seat in sight
Everybody thinks that they have the right
And I don't know where to begin
And I don't know where to begin, I'm seeing noise again...
We're all for your decline, in the court of our design
Everybody thinks they get the picture
Front row for the fight, and from every seat in sight
Everybody thinks they get the picture...
Everybody thinks that they have the right

Reticent Alien is the recording project of indie folk rock singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Justin Wiles, whose
music combines melodic, psychedelic guitars and the influence of experimental Americana and noise rock. His music has been compared to Elliott Smith, Bon Iver, Paul Simon, Iron & Wine, and The Shins....more
Glorious ear candy. Melodies and arrangements that call to mind the best of Jon Brion, intelligent lyrics steeped in spirituality and existentialism. Demands repeat listens. So powerful and unique. Reticent Alien
Frenetic 70's-tinged guitars with a modern indie edge, catchy as fuck melodies, snarky as fuck lyrics. When they get in a groove like at the end of Pepsi Cola Addict, I wish it would go on and on. Reticent Alien
A vibrant vision of "Central Americana" from the Costa Rica-based artist, blending heartland devotionals with playful Tropicália grooves. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 27, 2022
